Here's what A FANATIC'S BOOK BLOG has to say about Zan-Gah: "A new and amazing type of fiction that cannot be compared to anything else because it is so unique. Truthfully, I loved this book! Allan writes with a depth that is truly intense. Each and every scene in the book is written in such vivid detail that those of you with good imaginations will find yourselves walking the same paths as Zan does. There were times when I was so involved in this book..... Comments

"WHAT DOES HE WANT???" by earthshakerbooks on May 30, 2010, 2:50 pm, in category General

I hear a good deal (and am very glad to hear) what readers want from a book. No let's ask: what does the author want from her/his readers? I can only answer for myself: First, I want the reader to take his time. There are some things you can't rush through. The purpose of a good book is not to get done with it. I hope my readers are sorry when it comes to an end. One doesn't "read" a good book; one FEELS it. ..... Comments

Love’s an old remembered song
A drunken fiddler plays,
Stumbling crazily along
Crooked alleyways.
When his heart is mad with music
He will play the same refrain
five times over, blindly grinning
in the bitter teeth of rain
Harlots sometimes give him silver
when they wish a special tune
but the virginal draw curtains
to exclude him as the moon
Children think him mad but follow
on his trail, not knowing why,
til his form beco..... Comments

WOW! All of a sudden the Zan-Gah orders have started pouring in. I don't know what happened. It must be all of those blog reviews I have been getting lately. Not a single order for a while, and suddenly I am selling Zan-Gah by the case! I may even have to go to press again (3rd printing!). My thanks to my many reviewers, and to all of my new readers. I'm a rather slow reader, and I am a little envious of people who can speed-read. I once sold a copy of Zan-Gah at a play, and the buyer read it entirely during the fifteen minute intermission! He had been an editor, and was used to reading fast. I'm told that speed-readers have better comprehension than slower readers, but I can hardly believe it. When I read something, I want to savor it—to taste the words and react to the situations wit..... Comments

I cooked a beef stew today. We call it Yum because it is so darned yummy. You simply can't stop eating it, and that is the way food should be. A good restaurant is one that you are dying to go back to. A good loaf of bread....Well, when we were in France, we bought a bread and that great butter of Normandy that were so great that, in spite of ourselves, we ate the whole loaf in one sitting. We soon went back to that bakery for more of the sa..... Comments

I grew up in the pre-computer world, and I am only slowly (very slowly!) learning what computers can do. I am discovering that there is a whole world of blogs out there: blogs on cooking, on fishing, on politics, on philosophical speculation, and on everything. Among other types of blogs are those that deal with books. There are thousands of them out there, and we wrote to a few to as them asking them to review my Zan-Gah books. To my surprise, a whole..... Did you ever do anything that you were proud of? All my life I have been trying (just once!) to do something that I was really proud of. I was proud of some of my paintings, but not many. When I was giving art history lectures, once in a while I was really impressed with myself.
Tell you what. I am really proud of my Zan-Gah books. I reread them occasionaly (alright, every darned week) and I think to myself: "..... Comments

"Cave Beauty" by earthshakerbooks on February 17, 2010, 9:57 pm, in category General

I wonder how long people have had a sense of beauty. In both Zan-Gah books, I point out that the characters do not always have that capacity. Part of it was the harshness of their lives. People walking barefoot in the snow are not apt to comment on how pretty it is. It may be that they are awed by the power of nature (or their gods) to completely transform their environment and make it glistening white. So beauty and awe are connected. ..... Comments

"CATCHER IN THE RYE" by earthshakerbooks on January 30, 2010, 3:17 pm, in category General

J. D. Salinger, author of The Catcher in the Rye, died this week at age 91, after decades of a reclusive life. I am sorry he died, and sorry that he was such a recluse. That he spoke his own lines and lived his own style is evident from the book, which I truly loved. I first read The Catcher in the Rye when I was sixteen, and reread it for perhaps the 20th time a few weeks ago. I am 70 years old now (didn't know that, didja?) and I can fairly say that ..... I'll tell you a secret. I have never liked to go fishing. Once when I did, I caught my friend in the neck with my fish hook. But that is not why. It's the details. First, you have to acquire some bait. Worms, anyone? You have to handle the slimy things and then you have to bait your hook, not with a worm, but with a piece of worm. You wait all day to catch something, and then it's too small to keep. But if it..... Comments

You guys probably are wondering, "What do great authors do with their spare time?" Well, among other things, we cook stuff. Yes, the widely known author of the ZAN-GAH series likes to cook. Lately I made a pot roast that was to die for! Everybody enjoyed it. Chuck roast, a rather tough cut of meat, takes three hours to cook to tenderness. I include onions, potatoes, and carrots, and a bunch of other things to make it savory. ..... Comments
