I'll tell you a secret. I have never liked to go fishing. Once when I did, I caught my friend in the neck with my fish hook. But that is not why. It's the details. First, you have to acquire some bait. Worms, anyone? You have to handle the slimy things and then you have to bait your hook, not with a worm, but with a piece of worm. You wait all day to catch something, and then it's too small to keep. But if it isn't, you have to clean it, which is a nasty, repulsive job, and your hands stink so much you can't sleep at night. You certainly don't want to eat the thing!
That said, Zan catches fish in A Prehistoric Adventure. He spears them, hooks them, and catches them with his bare hands. It is the bare hands thing that I describe, and believe me, I have never even tried to catch fish by hand. So to write about it I had to do some research. Hope I didn't make too many mistakes in my description in Chapter 7: "The Wasp People," pages 75-76: "There he waded waist deep, and looking carefully at a hole in the muddy floor, submerged his head and thrust his hand into the opening. He was not at all surprised, and quite ready, when the sizable jaws of a catfish clamped down on his whole hand! No doubt laying eggs under the water, the infuriated fish was defending its haunt with instinctive ferocity. Zan pulled his hand back, fish and all, and held it thrashing between his legs until he could grasp it by the gill with his other hand. Then with some effort he dragged it toward the shore while it beat against the water with all its might." Not bad for a guy who doesn't like to fish Comments
